As part of our retrospective of French composer Bernard Parmegiani, we present a session of short films and documentaries exploring his collaborations with East European animators Walerian Borowczyk, Piotr Kamler, Jan Lenica and Peter Foldes.

From the 1960s, Parmegiani worked with these filmmakers to create the soundtracks for a series of groundbreaking animations. A multi-media presentation will outline the history of Parmegiani’s audio-visual collaborations, with extracts from Borowczyk's Le Dictionnaire de Joachim (1965) and Lenica's A (1964).

In the 1950s Borowczyk and Lenica had helped establish Poland's reputation for radically imaginative film posters, and in many ways both artists imported their highly tuned graphic sensibility into their later work in cinema. While each filmmaker possessed a singular, distinct vision, all three shared a background in fine arts, an innate feeling for audio-visual combinations, and an impish sense of humour.
